Description
The Leicester Seamstress is the name of this life size Statue which is situated outside the City Rooms on Hotel Street of the city of Leicester, England. She represents an 18th century hosiery worker, sewing the seam of a stocking. The statue was made by Walter Butler, and was unveiled in June of 1990.
Leicester was once a thriving city and county, manufacturing Hosiery, knitwear, dress making and shoes, it was world renowned. When you got a job in one of the factories it was a job for life. In fact, if you didn't like where you were or you hated who you worked with, you could walk out of one place, go across the road or nearby to another factory, and you would get another job. Now. It has all but gone!
